Frequently Asked Questions
A psychoeducational evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that examines how your child thinks, learns, and processes information.
Conducted by a Licensed Educational Psychologist, it looks at cognitive abilities (such as memory, reasoning, and processing speed), academic skills in reading, writing, and math, executive functioning, and social-emotional factors that may be affecting school performance.
Rather than simply identifying that your child is struggling, a psychoeducational evaluation uncovers why and gives you clear, data-driven recommendations to support their growth at school and at home.
Psychoeducational testing is typically not covered by insurance because it is educationally related rather than medically related. That said, some families are able to receive partial reimbursement from their insurance provider. We’re happy to provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.
A psychoeducational evaluation tests for a wide range of cognitive and academic areas based on what your child is experiencing. In addition to identifying how your child learns and processes information, our evaluations can provide a diagnosis of conditions such as ADHD, Autism, anxiety, and learning disabilities like dyslexia and dysgraphia.
Evaluations look at:
Cognitive ability: reasoning, memory, processing speed, and problem-solving
Academic achievement: reading, writing, spelling, and math skills relative to grade level
Executive functioning: attention, organization, planning, and impulse control
Social-emotional functioning: mood, anxiety, and behavioral patterns affecting school performance
The results are compiled into a detailed report with tailored recommendations for both school and home.
There is no strict minimum age for ADHD testing, though clinical guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend evaluations beginning at age 4 for children showing signs of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity.
A formal diagnosis requires that symptoms are present before age 12 and occur across multiple settings, such as both home and school.
If you are noticing persistent concerns in your young child, early evaluation is always better than waiting, because identifying challenges sooner means earlier access to support.
Signs of ADHD in school-age children generally fall into two categories: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. It is important to note that not every child will show both, as some children primarily struggle with focus while others are more visibly active or impulsive. Common signs to watch for include:
Difficulty staying focused on tasks or daydreaming frequently
Making careless mistakes or overlooking details in schoolwork
Forgetting or losing materials regularly
Trouble following multi-step instructions
Fidgeting, squirming, or difficulty staying seated
Talking excessively or blurting out answers
Struggling to wait their turn or frequently interrupting others
Avoiding tasks that require sustained mental effort (like homework)
If you or your child’s teachers are noticing these signs, an evaluation can provide clarity and direction.
Accommodations are adjustments made to how a student learns or demonstrates their knowledge, not to what they are expected to learn. They level the playing field for students with learning challenges, so they can access the same educational opportunities as their peers.
Common accommodations include extended time on tests, reduced-distraction testing environments, written directions alongside verbal instructions, and designated seating to minimize distractions.
Accommodations are formalized through either a 504 Plan (for students with a qualifying disability) or an IEP (Individualized Education Program, for students who also require specialized instruction).
A psychoeducational evaluation from Whole Mind Psychological Services can identify which accommodations are appropriate for your child and provide the documentation schools need to implement them.
A learning disability test can diagnose specific conditions that interfere with reading, writing, or math, most commonly:
Dyslexia: difficulty with reading, including sounding out words, reading fluently, and understanding what was read
Dysgraphia: difficulty with writing, including forming letters, spelling, and putting thoughts onto paper
Dyscalculia: difficulty with math, including understanding numbers, memorizing basic facts, and solving problems
Yes. Under federal law (IDEA), schools are responsible for paying for an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE).
If you disagree with the results of your child's school-conducted evaluation, you have the right to request an IEE at public expense. When a parent makes this request, the school must either agree to fund the IEE or file for a due process hearing to defend its original evaluation. They cannot simply refuse.
Once an IEE is completed, the school's IEP team is legally required to consider its findings in all educational planning decisions for your child. Whole Mind Psychological Services provides IEEs and can support families through this process from start to finish.
As a college student, you may have a few options for getting a dyslexia evaluation.
Some universities offer low-cost or subsidized evaluations through their counseling, disability services, or psychology departments, so checking with your school is a great first step.
You can also get a private college accommodations evaluation for a comprehensive assessment that gives you the documentation you need to request accommodations at your college.
With the right documentation in hand, you can bring it to your school's disability services office and access accommodations such as extended test time, assistive technology, and alternative format materials.
The length of time executive function coaching takes varies based on the student's goals, challenges, and level of engagement, but most research points to at least one full semester (roughly 12 to 16 weeks) for meaningful, lasting skill development.
Students often notice early improvements in organization and time management within the first few weeks, while deeper skills like self-regulation, planning, and understanding how they learn best tend to develop over several months of consistent practice.
At Whole Mind Psychological Services, coaching is tailored to each individual student, and we work collaboratively to set realistic goals and measure progress along the way.
